Martin County Commissioners Pass Landscape Watering Ordinance to Protect Water Resources

Martin County – Tuesday, June 15, 2022: The Martin County Board of Commissioners has passed a new landscape irrigation ordinance that implements the mandatory South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) landscape irrigation conservation measures. throughout the year.

SFWMD’s Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Conservation Measures (Chapter 40E-24, Florida Administrative Code) are designed to ensure the efficient use of landscape irrigation to conserve water resources. They are intended to protect the region’s water resources and fragile ecosystems for future generations.

Among the requirements, passage of the ordinance by Martin County Commissioners means landscape irrigation and lawn watering are NOT permitted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. because evaporation is highest during this period.

The year-round ordinance applies to landscape irrigation in the unincorporated portion of Martin County, which includes Hobe Sound, the portion of Hutchinson Island in Martin County, Jensen Beach, North River Shores, Palm City, Port Salerno and Rio. Residents residing in local municipalities are encouraged to check with their local authority for any landscape irrigation restrictions.

Over 50% of the water used by urban South Florida residents is for landscape irrigation. The required conservation measures have already been adopted by many other counties and municipalities in South Florida.

The ordinance authorizes landscape irrigation for existing landscaping as follows:

• Odd addresses ending in the numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 or the letters NZ are allowed to water on Wednesday and/or Saturday only

• Even addresses ending in the numbers 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 or the letters AM are authorized to water on Thursday and/or Sunday only

• Facilities with irrigation systems that water both even and odd addresses in the same areas, such as multifamily units, homeowners associations, rights-of-way, or other unaddressed locations, are permitted to water the Thursday and/or Sunday. only
