Tennessee Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, will step down Aug. 31 and take over as the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s senior policy and legislative affairs adviser.

Bell had previously announced that he would not seek re-election to his post, where his current term runs until November 8. The main winners of the District 9 seat were Republican Steve Southerland, who currently represents District 1, and Democrat Sara Thompson.

Bell was first elected to the Tennessee House in 2006 and moved to the Senate in 2010. He takes up his new post Sept. 1.

“As long as I can remember, I’ve been an avid outdoorsman,” Bell said. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help advance the agency’s efforts to ensure that Tennessee’s rich natural resources can be enjoyed by many future generations.”

Bell was co-chair and member of the National Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus and a member of the Executive Council of the National Association of Sportsmen’s Caucus. Bell has worked on laws such as Tennessee’s unlicensed transportation and he chaired the Senate Government Operations Committee from 2012 to 2018.

“His extensive legislative experience and his passion for hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation will make him a valuable member of the team,” said General Manager Jason Maxedon. “We look forward to working with him to advance essential policy to support the conservation and management of Tennessee’s wildlife, fisheries and waterways.”

Most recently, Bell chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and was a member of the Government Operations, Joint Education, Health and General Welfare, and Joint Judiciary and Government Committee committees.

“He will be terribly missed in the Senate, but I’m grateful to know he won’t go far,” said Lieutenant Governor and Senate Speaker Randy McNally. “Mike will be an outstanding defender for TWRA. I look forward to working with him as he excels in this new role.
