Town of Guyton Historic Preservation Committee Hosts Memorial Lighting Service

GUYTON – Those buried in Guyton / Ferguson cemeteries in 2020 have not been forgotten.

The Town of Guyton Historic Preservation Committee remembered them with their luminary memorial service on December 8.

“Once a year, we take this opportunity to honor and remember those who have moved on – and their families,” Mayor Russ Deen said at the start of the ceremony.

After an invocation from Pastor Joel Tucker of the Guyton Christian Church, he and Deen led the audience by singing “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” and “O Come All Ye Faithful”. Tucker played bass while Deen held up a guitar.

After the second song, Lucy Powell of the Historic Preservation Committee presented plaques and gifts to the families of Greg Helmuth and Leo Fred Griffin. Helmuth and Griffin were former Guyton city councilors who died in 2020.

“Words could never express how much we appreciate their efforts,” said Powell, “but we would like you to know – because they lie here – they are in our hearts and in our minds. God bless you and thank you for allowing them to be a part of Guyton.

Powell then asked members of the audience, each holding a lit white candle, if they had lost a loved one in the past year. Several indicated that they had done so and identified themselves and their relative.

The service ended with the broadcast of “Silent Night”.
